The skin is the largest organ in the body and by forming an external protective layer it is exposed to multiple environmental and local factors that can damage it and accelerate aging.

These external or environmental factors, to which we are subjected since we are born, are called exposomes, and they can negatively affect both our health and the quality of our skin. These are:

Excess solar radiation: it is scientifically proven that prolonged exposure to type A and B UV rays produce accelerated photo-aging and oxidative stress that predisposes to greater flaccidity, the appearance of spots and even carcinogenic lesions that we can prevent with the correct use of Solar protection.

  • Exposure to environmental pollutants, smoke from cars, from industries, among others, can also directly damage the quality of our skin and deteriorate it rapidly.
  • Tobacco and it's smoke that comes into contact with our skin produces an excess of free radicals that denature and break cell junctions, having a negative impact on our skin and even internal organs.
  • Malnutrition: lack of contribution of proteins, vitamins and minerals, which are precursor substances for the synthesis of collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid, among other cells essential for the proper maintenance of the skin, if they are deficient, there will be no matter raw to form new cells and this will be manifested in our skin.
  • Also, excess refined sugar produces what is called Glycation, which is nothing more than direct damage to DNA chains and the breakdown of pre-existing collagen fibers.   • Sudden changes in temperature in extreme climates or prolonged exposure to air conditioning can increase dehydration and dryness of our skin.
  • Mental and physical stress increases cortisol, and generates a pro-inflammatory state throughout the body that can manifest itself on the skin, contributing to the appearance of diseases such as acne, rosacea, aggravating psoriasis, among others.
  • Lack of sleep can also contribute to excess free radicals and alteration of hormonal and metabolic systems that can have an impact on the skin, accelerating the appearance of physical signs of aging.
  • A sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity also increase the body's inflammatory levels, generates oxidative stress, causes fat cells to accumulate and contributes to systemic aging that manifests itself in deteriorated skin.

    We can control or reduce many of these factors or exposomes as much as possible, much depends on us. Maintaining good habits and having a healthy lifestyle is what will take us on the path of successful, active and healthy aging for longer.
