The Importance of Vitamin C

4/5/2021

Let's start from the fact that vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an essential nutrient. This means that in no way can we be lacking in the proper concentrations. Humans, guinea pigs, primates and some bats do not synthesize their own vitamin C. The participation of this vitamin is vital in the different metabolic reactions of the organism; has multiple and vital functions:

  • It is a powerful antioxidant, since it neutralizes free radicals, which cause metabolic oxidation.
  • Participates in the synthesis of collagen (essential component in the structure of the skin, joints, blood vessels, etc.), in a metabolic reaction called hydroxylation of proline that forms hydroxyproline, which, in turn, achieves the cross-linking of the collagen fibers.
  • Optimizes the functioning of the immune system, for this reason the absorption of vitamin C (AA) in the cells of the immune system is greater than in all other cells. Gives neutrophils greater protection against oxidative stress. Improves the migration mechanism of immune cells to the site of infection.
  • It has anti-inflammatory action associated with the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines: tumor necrosis factor, interferon-23 and C-reactive protein.
  • Improves the healing of wounds, fractures and bleeding.
  • Contributes to metabolic reactions in the production of hormones at the adrenal level. It is necessary to have a good level of vitamin C, since when adrenal activity increases due to stress, the concentration of this vitamin decreases.
  • It acts as a cofactor of the enzymes that participate in the synthesis of neurotransmitters in the regulation of gene expression.
  • Facilitates the absorption of iron at the intestinal level.
  • By reducing oxidative stress, it helps in the treatment of cancer, since cancer cells consume a greater amount of vitamin C.
  • Vitamin C deficiency causes scurvy (mucosal lesions), fatigue, joint pain, petechiae, bleeding gums, easy bruising, delayed wound healing. These symptoms are manifested when the deficiency is marked, what is worth noting is that, if we do not have adequate levels of this vitamin, the metabolic reactions in which they participate are not carried out properly, causing a series of organic disorders of which we will not always have symptoms.
  • The recommended daily intake (RDI) is 75-90 mg / dl.
  • It is proven that the world population ingests 20% less of the required vitamin C, and this percentage is even higher in some sectors of our country, so it is necessary to supplement regularly.
